The Story of the Fisher-Price© Co.

Fisher-Price© has made some of the most popular toys of all time. As the best loved, most trusted name in toys, Fisher-Price has been helping to make childhood special for generations of kids.

Fisher-Price© was founded in 1930 in East Aurora, NY by three talented entrepreneurs: Herman Fisher, formerly involved in marketing games, Irving Price, a retired variety chain store executive and Helen Schelle, owner and operator of a toy store in central New York. The three partners combined their diverse manufacturing and retailing experience to create the toy company and confidently brought 16 wooden toys to the International Toy Fair in New York City. The whimsical nature and magical surprises of those first toys quickly caught on and became the hallmarks of Fisher-Price ever since.

In 1969, Fisher-Price was acquired by The Quaker Oats Company©. In 1991, Quaker Oats spun off its Fisher-Price © division and the company became an independent, publicly traded company. In November 1993, stockholders of Fisher-Price ©, Inc. and Mattel, Inc. approved a merger under which Fisher-Price became a wholly owned subsidiary of Mattel Inc.

Today, backed by more than 70 years experience, the Fisher-Price name is considered one of the most trusted brand names in America and one of the "top 10 brands of the decade" according to research company Equitrends. Through licensing agreements, the Fisher-Price© brand appears on many categories of children's products as well as toys, including software, books, eyewear, bicycles and more. The company enjoys brand recognition of 100 percent among parents in the United States, where the average preschool family owns at least 12 Fisher-Price toys.

The Fisher-Price company has more than 950 employees and produces thousands of toys each year. U.S. sales in 2000 were $1.2 billion. Some of the company's best known "classic" brands include Little People, Power Wheels, Rescue Heroes, and View-Master. The Fisher-Price brand also appears on toys based on widely recognized character brands: from Bear in the Big Blue HouseTM, Blue's CluesTM, and Disney, to Sesame Street, VeggieTales, and Winnie the Pooh. The Loving Family Dollhouse, introduced in 1978, has become one of the more popular items in the company's long list of toys, with more than 100,000 produced each year.
